Self reflection and conclusion-Semester A-Postgraduate media- 2D animation



Thought these 29 posts online, I got the result of my semester A. In the semester A ,I was focus on the realistic character style and abstract element.I used the 3/5 percent time to explore the question: how can my drawing characters be looks exist and realistic? How can I add emotion into it?

I used the methods which were method acting and studying on emotional research to develop my animation character.And in the media discourse ,I found the semiotics studying was really useful for me to present a realistic style animation character.

also the abstract visual elements and experience can be used in realistic animation art ,because the realistic style art requires to show more human depth psychology.abstract motion graphic always give audience a opening imagination.
I want to draw realism(or just the feeling of realism) into animation , so I have to obverse the reality. Here have three question: what the reality looks like? is it specific? or abstract? simple? or complex?  what is the reality feeling like? dark? cold? warm? or grey? What is the relationship between the character's behavior and the environment?

I was looking for the characteristics of  the answers for those questions.then choose the best art form to do mimicry. In this part,I will use the phenomena method as a tool to explore the answers.It can be analysis by  semiotics theory.when you design a picture, the first thing is what is the signified. if we want to represent the reality in animation form , what does the signifier will be? What does the line, shape , and atmosphere , shadow and lighting will be ? 
The realistic style animation can be divied into two part: Character and environment.
To talk about realistic character, we can not say the manga or anime style is the most succussed one. Because the Japanese animation is too flat to fit the feature of our realistic visual experience.we used to live in a three determinantal world. In my impact, few of DISNEY new films were done well in this field. In animation world, the first feature of realistic character is angle,I think. A realistic character changes the form looking with the camera angles  changing, Especially met the big angle perspective.if I focus on this point to draw character , it become charming and realistic. 
The second keypoint for drawing a realistic animation character is Empathy. Add emotion into characters behaver is very important for evoking the realistic feeling . a character appearance and his behaver will become a signifier.
Use semiotics as a method to explore the different levels in signifier and signified. For example,the comic maker Huangjiaweis work.  

          

This is a long leg women.the signifier : beautiful line drawing , fluency shape and very detailed cloth design. The signified can be a graceful lady, and looks like a hero.in the second level of semiotics. The female hero will be a denotation,it means ,independent spirit.  In connotation level,it symbolized great, powerful,and aristocracy. In the example , environment also can be a sign. It looks complex and some part is abstract.the color is very Grey.all these phenomena close to the reality.so the art work as a signifier, its signified is realism.

Many posts can be a very strong impact on my memory, those viewpoints and academic analysis will remind me where I need to go. And new skills were discovered during the month. I want to do more depth research on the relationship between abstract element, realistic graphic and human perception , emotion ,mood..

connecting visuals to sound. We worked with pen and paper, with patching (in Pd), with code (in Processing), and via a survey of some interesting recent work, in this case all connected to drawing. A theme of the conference had been “synesthesia.” But it’s important to note that synesthesia goes beyond just making music visual. It deals with people actually having a sensory experience in which one input (like sound) triggers a different sense (like smell or color). Sure enough, someone who attended had a student who experiences quite strongly that nonvoluntary reaction.
This short film explores the extreme, visceral connection that cross-sensory sensation can produce.
Clinical sensory phenomena aside, the surreal and strange world that emerges is to me a perfect metaphor for all the symbols we use for music and sound, for all the (wonderfully) bizarre feelings that arise as you try to grasp something as unseen and fleeting as music and musical emotion with your brain. It’s long hours in the studio trying to understand what you’re doing, it’s the user interface for computer software, it’s notation. It’s, in a word, impossible.

Project 03 feed back

Project 03

Feedback: The camera movement is not gentle, Martin helped me fixed it with curve later. The haze need change opacity when camera cross. The second one need doing the background builds in 3d space.But the light is good. The third one need blur the plane,to make a kind of distance. Maybe make it in 3d space as well.the last one is good, the lighting on character may need adjust effect with the back traffic lighting.

Abstract line using ----show more depth psychology

An short animation form Royal College of Art .
I like the line art direction, and the event it picked which was about kill and crime.and alone . the bad part of humanity.
I got real feeling of pain, evil, and out of control from the character face. and the helpless world , cold environment. 






and this image is the development process of bug bunny.
I know some rules about information delivery. for human perception , they get the information in different categories。 When they get something havenot seen before, their mind become opened for it.(new media works in this way) in the bug bunny example, the first generation looks like any bunny,even not.And it allows perception open. But the last generation, is the most specific,it less magnification, it is the famous one.

Simply speaking, abstract and iconic character , aesthetics helps animator to present a more thinking , depth feeling for audience.

Project 3 Use lighting and shadow contact with mood and ahotomesphere

What I want to do is to demonstrate the mood with not too dark color .


concept is a city life . I want to express some high pressure feeling ,and maybe similar to the japanese animation " the last vampireand" , and the very moving and touching picture from the PS2 game"journey"

I think the color in these scenery is try to demonstrate a mystery and unknown urban space.and also with tension.

I think this work is an successful example to demonstrate the kind of mood and emotion which with tragic and hopeful just with no high contract color.

The final look is combines a lot of photos , and I named it as " dystopai" which is the oppiste to the utopai, the image is a big city has a unknow background . center control.theme is dark city, with high rate crime. 

Daily research_human perception of image is not" flat"


This video is a fun-making music video from koji Morimoto's animation work
I picked up the video is to proof the evidence that audience can get the huge information by 2d image. even the music, melody,rhythm, and kinesthesia. I just image the human perception as a searching unit, it will extend and  filled with the main subject in animation.and enjoy the each  feeling of the property.

Simply speaking, how much feeling the audience got is depended on how much properties of the subject.I think thinking in the way can develop the quality of 2d animation.

Daily research_Body language

it is a music video by the Chemical Brothers performing Swoon
It s beautiful body image and perfect acting is depth moving. I just readed the article <What makes motion meaningful? Affective properties of abstract motion>  the sentense is"We differentiate motion from movement. Movementcomprises two semantic elements: what the moving objectimplies or affords (a waving hand is aesthetically andcommunicatively different than a waving flag, for example),and what the motion of the object suggests (e.g. waving asopposed to pointing or stabbing, bouncing as opposed tojittering). Isolating the motion from the object begs thequestion of how communicative the motion alone may be.Humans can perceive and identify emotions from sparse,abstracted animations of point-light displays" it is really good point of abstract motion graphic affect our feeling and emotion.




 I want to make some meaningful abstract motion graphic , and combines the traditional animation movement with new media aesthetics. the viewpoint in the article is what I am looking for.

Media discourse_ Some thoughts


(1)_The practice , process of image delivery. I got a very strong impression on this game we made on class. two people , one back to blackboard, he need draw; the other one watched what teacher drawing ,and make sure what you get is correct information telling to the drawer. the teacher drawing.chat1. the final result ,chat 2.

What I thinking is the process of information delivery is quit hard. "The information is changed by the media form", I am the teller, may because the language missing and noise, the result is difficult to relavent to the original picture.the result remind me the one original pure information is delivery and spread in many different channel, this situation lead to the different vision of one simple concept. 

The class is media discourse, understand media, writer is Macluhan. 



Project 1 Red Chase Blue Feed back

Today’s tuition for the "30 sec practice animation/one week". Our Martin pointed that "in the shot 04,the running charactors locked in that shot".This situation breaked the attention of audience. and the action in shot 04 is shit! hahaha, yes ,I should make the movement more exaggerate to show the strong emotion and feeling in shot 04. and Martin pointed that "shot 05 is good contact with shot 06 with the color turnning ". I quit like shot 05 the fish eye,and shot 07 may add color on the character body .

Martin said the shot 08 need animate the foot , and the blue guy should not floating on the camera. the abstract door is a kind of confusion.I need more reference and research on Graphic design .in the end , shot 09 and shot 10 unfinished because the time no left.

Above all, the project 1 is successful on those shots I focus on . and "What I gonna to do" is do more research on Graphic Aesthetics, Exaggerate figure movement,and the audience"feeling" , their emotion changing , and "attention" in storyboard design.
